CASE – Jointec

When the molding tools at Jointec’s plant began to produce uneven results, their production of recycled wood was affected. A process that is normally supposed to be stable and reliable increasingly required additional maintenance beyond the usual.

The Assignment

Jointec grinds down old wooden packaging and wood waste, which is then compressed into new products, including blocks for wooden pallets, spacers, and biochar. During this process, the molded parts are exposed to high temperatures, pressure, and corrosion. It is important that everything functions properly.

The problem was that the friction was too high, which caused the material to start sticking to the molds and disrupted the workflow.

“Once it became clear that we needed lower friction in the molds, a contact in Beiarn—who had had good experiences with them in the past—recommended Nordkrom to us,” says Karl Berg, head of the Commercial Department at Jointec

We took on the project on short notice and began by analyzing the surfaces and structure of the molded parts.

“It was a time-sensitive project, and we wanted to deliver as quickly as possible. With complex details, you also have to proceed by trial and error, and we have extensive experience to draw on in that regard,” says Mattias, co-owner and operations manager at Nordkrom.

Background

Jointec has over 30 years of experience in wooden packaging and is a leading provider of equipment and blocks for wooden pallet manufacturing.

Their molding process places high demands on the tools. The surfaces must withstand heavy stress while ensuring a consistent flow of material, even as the materials change over time.

Finding the right surface treatment was therefore crucial to ensuring that the shape would last longer and make the process more stable.

Insight

The structure of the molded parts was more complex than usual, which meant that the grinding process had to be precisely tailored to the shape. Even small differences in the grinding direction can have a significant impact on how the material releases.

For Jointec, the timeline was also important. Production needed to get back up and running quickly.

Solution

We performed a combination of grinding and chrome plating on the molded parts. By tailoring the method to the specific parts, we created a smooth sliding surface with lower friction and better corrosion resistance.

The work was completed on schedule, despite the complexity of the details. By testing different grinding methods and coatings, the team identified the option that yielded the best results for Jointec’s materials and press environment.

“We were pleased with how straightforward everything was. Nordkrom was quick, responsive, and easy to work with, and everything worked just as they promised,” says Karl, Jointec

The Results

The molded parts were given a surface finish that provided significantly better release, and the process ran more smoothly right from the start. Jointec was able to return to more stable production, with stronger and longer-lasting molded parts for the press tool.

The assignment also served as the starting point for a dialogue on future collaborations.

“We want to further develop our collaboration in the field of mechanical work. Nordkrom was easy to work with. A professional company,” says Karl, Jointec

Nordkrom on the assignment

This project demonstrates what the right surface treatment can do for both functionality and durability.

“We want our customers to feel confident after working with us—that we’ve listened, understood, and delivered a solution that stands the test of time,” says Anton, co-owner and operations manager at Nordkrom.
