CASE – RISE Sicomp

When RISE needed to solve a problem with its unique press for bio-based composites, they turned to Nordkrom. This led to a close and rapid collaboration in which we improved the tool’s performance and durability.

The Assignment

When the RISE Composite Technology Unit in Piteå contacted us, it was regarding the surface treatment of molded parts for a unique process for pressing bio-based composite materials.

The press tool had problems with material sticking to the surface, which slowed down both the testing process and the development work.

“We needed a solution to the problem so that the material would release more easily,” says Robert Westerlund, a research and development engineer at Rise.

We began by producing smaller test mold components for RISE to evaluate. Once the results were approved, we were able to move forward in the process and apply a hard chrome plating to the actual mold components.

Background

RISE in Piteå is a national research center where engineers, technicians, and researchers develop the sustainable materials of the future.

Their printing press was custom-ordered for use with bio-based and polymer composites.

Pressen is a test bed where companies and researchers come together to develop processes, find new material solutions, and accelerate the transition to sustainable materials.

This was the first time RISE contacted Nordkrom.

“I’ve passed Nordkrom several times on my way to work. When we needed this kind of help, we got in touch through their website,” Robert says.

Insight

The problem with the previous tool was that material got stuck in it far too often.

There are several ways to solve such problems, such as using chemical release agents, but for this particular type of material, hard chrome plating proved to be the best method.

The structure of the molded parts was complex, and the grinding process required careful consideration.

The grinding directions had to follow the shape exactly so that the surface would release as well as possible.

“What surprised us the most was how quickly everything went. We’re used to this kind of thing taking a long time—usually several weeks—but Nordkrom had it all done in just a few days,” says Robert.

Our method also means that the tool can be used for much longer before any repairs are needed, and if it does wear out, we can re-coat it instead of having to replace the entire tool.

Solution

We completed the assignment by:

✔️ Prepare test samples to determine the right surface finish for Rise materials

✔️ Hard chrome plating the molded parts of the pressing tool

✔️ Adjust the grinding process based on texture, material, and release function

✔️ Work with short lead times and frequent communication

✔️ Provide recommendations for future projects and changes to materials
